After its first successful issue, the student - produced From the Wellhouse: the IU Kokomo Review of Arts and Sciences, is back! Its success is a landmark in IU Kokomo history and a watermark for creativity, research and progress of students on our campus.
The beginning issue of From the Wellhouse contained not only student artwork, but short stories and even articles of a more academic nature. Non-fiction, research papers and fiction alike are welcome writing submissions and artwork of all types is also accepted. The student magazine hopes to keep representing learners from all fields on campus as well as artists and writers from the larger community.
From the start, the creation of From the Wellhouse has been propelled by the enthusiasm of the students involved and the faculty adviser, Dr. Eva White. Other faculty involved in making the magazine a reality are Karla Stouse, Gregory Steel and Dr. Katherine Holcomb. Some of the students primarily involved in its creation and who were dependable enough to see it through many meetings and stages of design deserve a mention here: Matt Russell, the student leader of the magazine; Marjorie Schaeffner; Randi Irwin; Andrew Garnand; Julie Dorneman; Sam Thompson; Mary Beth Thompson; Corey Gascho; Joe Klemann; Yogi Olivarez and many others. Members of the Correspondent staff, particularly Johnathan Grant, have also done their best to be receptive to the new magazine and its role on campus.
From the Wellhouse fills a creative need on campus and addresses a constituency which the student newspaper, because of its nature, cannot adequately serve. We, the staff of the Correspondent, welcome our new sibling with open arms.
For the new school year, From the Wellhouse magazine has prepared more events for raising funds for its next issue, which is projected for the end of April 2009. This fundraising will join in regularly scheduled campus activities and provide support for an active campus.
During the Activities Fair, which runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 9 and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, September 10 in Alumni Hall, the magazine will have a booth setup to provide information about their publication and make the first issue available for a small donation. There will be an opportunity to join the magazine’s staff in different capacities.
Additionally, From the Wellhouse will have its Launch Party, which will be a “Live Issue” on Wednesday, September 10 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Art Gallery where students will read their own writings and display their artwork.
Another fund raising event will be held later in September on the 24th and 25th. This is the Well House “Yard Sale” in which students, businesses and community members will be able to rent “plots” on the Earth stage and sell their wares.
Finally during the week of Oct. 22-26th, a Halloween event will also be planned. Look for flyers around campus announcing all of these events to raise funds for the student publication. From the Wellhouse also has a website: http://www.iuk.edu/~wellhous/ where you can go for more information and submission guidelines.
Submissions for the magazine will be accepted until the deadline of Nov. 2nd at midnight, and the next issue should be released sometime in the spring, around the month of April.
The first issue of From the Wellhouse may be picked up for a small donation in the Humanities office and at all fundraising events.
Editor's Note: While we welcome submissions to the Correspondent, we recognize that From the Wellhouse is a more appropriate venue for longer pieces of fiction and non-fiction that go beyond our capacity as a newspaper. On the other hand, we are happy to offer a timely, regularly published forum for students' opinions on many subjects as well as shorter, more succinct news stories, features, and the like.
