We should thank Student Union Board for bringing us yet another great musical act for Tunes at Noon. Josh Mast was here October 1st rocking the KC Commons with his soulful melodies and Indie rock feel. Josh is part of Josh Mast and the Nervous Habits, a three-piece band he started after playing solo for nearly six years with two of his friends from high school. One is a school teacher, and the other does construction, which allowed Josh to practice his solo act for IU Kokomo. He says he would always rather play with his band, but he “wouldn’t mind doing this seven days a week.” When they are live, they can play shows for up to four hours with covers of artists such as Clapton and Hendricks. They also play their own, original songs. They work to be unique, but they enjoy playing popular songs for their audiences. Josh opened his act with a cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Give Me One Reason.” Soon Josh’s friend Ben from the Joe Cameron Band joined him with his saxophone, adding the perfect touch to the blues feel. They played together on a beautiful, and almost playful, cover of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb.” They also played “Rolling Stone” by Muddy Waters and “I Shot the Sheriff” by Bob Marley. Josh played the first song he learned on guitar nine years ago next month, he claimed, which was “Turn the Page” by Bob Seger. Josh also performed some of his own songs including “Blues with a View,” “Broken Strings,” and “Backbone Rattle.” If you happened to miss Josh Mast at Tunes at Noon, you can probably catch him playing at the Sycamore Marketplace for open-mic night on Thursday evenings. |
