Continuing with the mission to showcase the creative and academic work being produced by members of the IU Kokomo community, the staff of the campus literary journal From the Well House is hard at work putting together the magazine’s next issue.
Led by Dr. Eva Roa White, From the Well House has been steadily growing in scope since the debut issue came out last April. In addition to now having an online presence, the magazine recently moved into a new office on the Main Building’s second floor. Additional resources have been provided by the Humanities Department and other faculty that have helped to improve the work being done on the magazine’s next issue, which is currently on schedule to be released sometime after Spring Break.
This year, one of the magazine’s main goals has been to push the visibility of creative work beyond the Well House’s published incarnation. In the fall, this goal was achieved on campus with the ‘Live Issue,’ in which published authors read their work, while the art from the first issue was on display. There also has been an effort to strengthen ties with the local community by sponsoring a number of writer’s workshops, as well as an association with Shearer Printing.
To encourage new membership, a callout meeting was recently held, with graduating staff members looking for students who will continue the magazine after they have moved on from IU Kokomo. A number of vacant positions will be open in the coming fall semester, which will provide the opportunity for incoming students to work on the magazine in any capacity they may be interested in; including the editorial board, communications officer, and layout of the publication.
Another opportunity the Well House is now able to provide to students is the chance to earn academic credit by working on the magazine. Variable internships which cover all of the magazine’s aspects can be registered for by interested students through their advisors. This not only will help students by providing credit, but will also be a nice addition to college transcripts.
With the Well House being an interdisciplinary journal, the publication is open to students from all majors, not just English and Fine Arts. Students from other areas are particularly encouraged to join and contribute to help the magazine continue to grow and encompass all of the noteworthy accomplishments being achieved by the students, faculty and staff at IU Kokomo.
Individuals interested in becoming part of the Well House are invited to attend the weekly meeting, held every Thursday at 4 p.m. in room KO 221.
