Dear IU Kokomo Students,
On Thursday, February 12, freshmen and seniors received an email invitation from me and Sarah Sarber, our Director of Student Life, to participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement, or NSSE (pronounced “Nessie”). As Interim Chancellor of IU Kokomo, I am very proud of what IU Kokomo has to offer you. But I also know that we can improve upon what we do. To guide us in making improvements, from time to time we ask students to complete surveys which tell us about their experiences.

A few months ago, I had an experience that made me think critically about opinions. One Saturday morning I was at Replay Rehab Center having physical therapy done on my Achilles tendon. The therapists that were working that day were taking jabs at each others’ favorite college teams. For the most part, I listened and laughed at their banter. One of the therapists liked me, because I always wore something IU to workout in. He would say, “There’s a good man, or there’s my man.” We would normally talk briefly about the state of IU football or basketball. So, if I can use a street phraseology, “I thought we were cool.” I found out we were cool until I stated my opinion on one of his favorite sports teams.

I believe it is important for IU Kokomo students to participate in the upcoming Hoosiers for Higher Education Statehouse Visit Day. Many students often complain to their friends, over lunch, about what's wrong with Indiana, with IU, or with IU Kokomo. To be fair, some also discuss what the state and the university are doing right.
