On February 4, 2009, the Indiana men’s basketball team beat Iowa 68-60 in Bloomington Indiana. You may ask, “Why is this such a big deal? IU always wins in Bloomington.” Well, unfortunately, not this season. The Hoosiers are 6-15 for the regular season. If you count exhibition games, which this season they should, IU is 8-15. You have to go back 40 years to find a regular season this bad. In the 1969-1970 season under acting coach Jerry Oliver, IU was 7-17 overall. In the Big Ten they posted a 3-11 record. Why was this win so important? IU had not won since December 10, 2008 in Bloomington against Texas Christian University. Since that time, the Hoosiers had been on an 11 game losing streak. And to add insult to injury, this was Indiana’s first Big Ten win.

The title of this article may sound like a contradiction in terms. If you are not talking about the Indianapolis Colts or Notre Dame, most people outside the state would say, “Do they play football in Indiana?” The answer to that question from an avid football fan is, “Yes, we play football in Indiana.” Sometimes not well, but we do play the game in our great state. Indiana is known far and wide for being a basketball state. But we do play football. In college football, this was not the year for the big three. (Notre Dame, Purdue and Indiana.) All three struggled in their own right. The Fighting Irish ended the season with a 6-6 record. All though this was better than last season, but going 500 is not up to ND standards. Most Notre Dame fans have the mentality, “We should be in national championship contention every year or nothing.” Being in position for a national championship at ND will be difficult.

My, what a difference a year makes. At this time last season, the Hoosiers were 3-1. They had hopes of going to a bowl game. A year later IU is 2-2 with slim bowl hopes. The problem is every team that IU will play this season has improved from last year. We have a break this season. The Hoosiers do not have to play Ohio State and Michigan. Unfortunately, this would be the year to play Michigan. The Wolverines are struggling to find themselves. Most teams in the Big Ten would be happy to have OSU and U of M off their schedule. At this point in the season, IU will not play any teams that have a losing record. The worst record at this time is a tie between Purdue and Illinois. Both these teams have 2-2 records. The Boilermakers fell to Notre Dame in South Bend 38-21. Even the game against Central Michigan on November 1 will not be easy. CMU barely lost to Purdue in Lafayette. When it comes to IU football, I always see the glass half full. But I have to be honest and objective as a sports writer. Unless, the Hoosiers can turn things around in a hurry, the possibility of playing 13 does not look good. |

On the beautiful Saturday afternoon of August 30th, the Indiana football team got their first win of the season. Our beloved Hoosiers beat the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers 31-13. Kellen Lewis had a record setting day. He was the only player to have two runs over 60 yards in the same game. His first TD went for 75 yards, and the second for 62 yards. At the end of the day, he ran for 185 yards on nine carries. This is over 20 yards per carry. Any football team will take this production. Kellen accounted for over half of the 297 total yards rushing. The other third came by committee. These yards were divided between six players. The most productive of the three rushers were, Bryan Payton, Demetrius McCray and Marcus Thigpen. Between them, they combined for 105 yards.

Your loveable, IU football fanatic columnist is back for another season. But let me open this article with a story. I went down to Bloomington the weekend of Aug. 15-16. My purpose was to watch the Hoosiers inter-squad scrimmage. Friday evening, I was at the YMCA getting my bench press on, and in walks Anthony Thompson, better known as A.T., who is arguably the greatest running back in Indiana history. Thompson is also looked at as being one the best backs in college history.
